Jožef Stefan Institute
JSI was founded in 1949 and is the leading Slovenian research organisation for a broad spectrum of basic and applied research in the fields of natural sciences and technology. The staff of around 960 specialized in research in physics, chemistry and biochemistry, electronics and information science, nuclear technology, energy utilization and environmental science work in different Departments. As a co-founder of the University of Nova Gorica and the Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School (JSIPS) the JSI is also very involved with the university education. JSI was involved in 470 7th FW projects and 348 H2020 EU funded projects. In 2018, JSI coordinated 20 projects and numerous projects in previous years. The multidisciplinary research of the Department of Environmental Sciences focuses on the combination of physical, chemical and biological processes that influence the environment, man and human activities. Therefore, the work is based on three main areas: development, optimisation and validation of analytical methods, study of geochemical processes that influence cycling and transformations of substances and elements, and environmental impact assessment which evaluates the risk that human activities present for human health and for the environment. The Department is involved in a number of national and international research projects and directly with the users of applied research. In order to stay abreast of the constant advances in science, much effort is put into development of knowledge and modernisation of scientific equipment.
